With the In Care Survivor Service Scotland

What are the expectations of the service on Volunteers?
– Volunteers are expected to complete a 12 unit training course (6 days), usually delivered at weekends, before commencing work with service users. Further training opportunities will be offered to volunteers some of which are voluntary while others are mandatory and imperative to continuing work with service users.

Disclosure – Volunteers will be expected to complete an enhanced disclosure Scotland police check and also to provide 2 references which will be checked before commencement of voluntary work.

Time – A minimum commitment of 2 hours per week is expected. This time should include service user contact and administration time. Volunteers can request a break at any time through consultation with their line manager. 

Supervision – Volunteers are expected to attend supervision regularly. Attendance at supervision is monitored to ensure ethical working practice.

Line Management – Volunteers are expected to attend line management regularly to review training and development, ensure support and supervision is adequate, to manage practical and organizational issues and as an opportunity to discuss positive progress and concerns.

Networking – Although networking with other volunteers and staff is often the choice of the volunteer your line manager will try to encourage you to be involved in social events as this is a good way to build team moral and peer support and also to learn more about the varied work being carried out across Scotland.


Counselling volunteers - are required to be trained to a minimum of Diploma level in counselling. Trainee counsellors are required to be on a COSCA/BACP approved course to at least diploma level and be deemed ready for practice by the training provider. Advocacy volunteers are required to have sound computer skills, the ability and tenacity to research organisations and search for archived information and records, as well as an ability to assist service users with paper work such as DLA applications
